WHAT WE DO
Drag Queen Story Hour NYC provides a range of fun and fabulous educational experiences for children and teens from 3 to 18 years old in libraries, schools, museums, and community spaces in all five boroughs of New York City—and now virtually! Through storytelling and creativity, DQSH teaches children about gender diversity and all forms of difference to build empathy and give kids the confidence to express themselves however they feel comfortable.
DQSH NYC is a proud member of the Drag Queen Story Hour global network.
HOW WE DO IT
In our original 45-minute Drag Queen Story Hour (DQSH) program designed for children ages 3-8, local drag performers trained by children’s librarians read picture books that touch on themes of diversity and difference, sing songs, and do craft activities. In learning about drag as a form of dress-up and play, children learn to see beyond the pink and blue gender binary and celebrate difference in themselves and others.
In addition to our original DQSH program, we offer bilingual Spanish/English DQSH, DQSH for kids with autism and other special needs, interactive workshops for older kids and teens, and even DQSH for adults!
We offer free DQSH programs for public elementary schools and sliding scale rates for other types of venues.
WHERE WE DO IT
DQSH events take place at libraries, schools, museums, festivals, parks, block parties, bookstores, play spaces, workplaces, and cultural and community institutions around the city—and now virtually! In 2019 we produced 185 programs across all five boroughs and served around 4000 children. In 2020 we produced 36 in-person programs and 118 virtual programs, serving 1246 children in person and thousands more virtually. The vast majority of our programs are free to attend. We are approved vendors with all three public library systems in the city as well as the New York City Department of Education. See our Events page for a comprehensive list of our partners.
