Drag Storytellers

We are looking for drag kings, drag artists who can read in Mandarin Chinese, and drag artists who speak ASL to join our group of children’s storytellers.

Drag storytellers read stories, sing songs, and do craft activities with children of all ages in libraries, schools, and other community spaces in all five boroughs of the city. As of January 2021, all of our programs are presented virtually on Instagram Live, Zoom, and pre-recorded video. See examples of our virtual programs here.

If you are interested, please reach out to Harmonica Sunbeam, Coordinator of the Storytellers Committee, at, with your answers to the following questions:

  • Why are you interested in working with Drag Queen Story Hour NYC?

  • What experience do you have working with children?

  • Where do you live and what is your general availability for readings? (weekends, week days, mornings, afternoons, etc.)

Applicants who pass the initial screening will be asked to submit a short video of themselves reading one children’s book. Those who are accepted will be paid $100 per reading for the first six readings. After this probationary period, successful storytellers will be invited to join our Storytellers Committee and paid $150 per program.
